Metal Roofing Styles

When most people think of a metal roof, they think of either a corrugated metal roof or a standing seam roof.  The reality is that is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to what is now available on the market.

Standing Seam

When you mention a metal roof to someone, often the standing seam roof is what people think of.  It is the most common style of metal roofing.  For good reason too!  This was one of the first styles of metal roofs available.

Standing seam roofs are typically made with aluminum or steel, though occasionally you will see copper as well.  Of the metal roofing styles available, standing seam has one of the lowest costs for metal roofing options.

Metal Sheet Roofing

Metal sheet roofing

Sheet roofing is another common metal roofing type. While it used to be commonly referred to a corrugated sheet roofing, innovation has updated sheet roofing to include many styles.

Like standing seam, aluminum, and steel or common materials for it, however, occasionally you may also see tin as well on some older roofs.  What we love about metal sheet roofing is the broad amount of styles it now comes in and the ease of installation for the metal roof panels.  You can even get it to look similar to a tile or shingle roof.

Metal Tile or Metal shingle roofs

Metal shingles have been around for over 100 years, though like other residential and commercial roofing materials, they have seen significant improvements over the years.

Installed in a similar fashion as an asphalt shingle roof, metal tile or metal shingle roofs are a huge improvement over other options.  With styles to match almost any architecture and the durability to last as long as 70 years, they are a great choice.

Metal Roofing Materials

There are several metal roofing materials available on the market today.  Understanding which is the best for your specific roof is important.  One of the features we love about almost all metal roofing materials is they are recyclable.  That means not only will your roof last longer but when it is time to replace it, it will not end up in a landfill.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a great choice for many metal roofing projects.  It is lightweight, durable, and naturally corrosion-resistant.  Additionally, it is available in all different styles and colors to match any home or business.  That makes it a great option for your next roof replacement.

While we love many of the features of aluminum there are a few downsides to using aluminum over other materials.  The biggest downside we have seen is the durability against hail compared to steel roofs.  Additionally, it is likely to be a bit more expensive than the steel options.

Galvalume Steel

This is a steel compound that is coated with aluminum and zinc.  These coatings make the steel corrosion resistant while also keeping the durability up and the cost down.  Like aluminum, it comes in a variety of styles and colors

While it is a great material, there are a few cons to this style of metal roofing.  The styles that are available in it tend to be simple with minimal bends.  This is due to limitations in the aluminum and zinc coating.

Additionally, when cutting this material it must be cut with a shear instead of a saw.  This may lead to additional installation costs.

Galvanized Steel

Galvanization of steel is a process that introduces another metal through heat or electricity to create a steel alloy that is corrosion resistant.  Of all the metal roofing materials available this is one of the most cost efficient and most commonly used.

While it is the most common metal roofing material on the market today, it does pose a few challenges that other options don’t.  Like Galvalume Steel, it must be sheared not saw cut.  Also, if not installed properly it may be prone to early rusting or a shortened lifespan.

Copper

Copper Roofing is one of those materials that will stand the test of time on your home.  Most people know it for the blue-green hue it gets after 10-15 years.  Patination is what causes the coloration and is important for the copper to build up so it will last you sometimes over 100 years.

The biggest downside to copper is the cost.  With an average cost of as much as 4 to 5 times other roofing materials it can be a challenge for some to afford.  Additionally, the natural patination process can cause staining on other materials like siding or brick as well.

Metal Roofing Color

No longer are you limited to color with metal roofing.  With all of the options available now you can get your metal roofing in almost any color imaginable.  Some styles or materials may dictate the color choices available, but there are usually reasonable alternatives if you are set on one color or another.
